15:30 Redefining teaching observations for the online tutor: a learning design approach

The workshop will revisit the notion of peer observation in the context of online learning and teaching. Dialogue, consensus between the observer and the observee and the focus on peer review which are perceived to be of great value in traditional, face-to-face observations are constrained in online learning spaces; however the great advantage of an online environment is the digital, longitudinal trail of a tutor’s teaching philosophy as opposed to the ‘snapshot’ of teaching practice in a traditional observation. The observed trail consists of the learning design as it is captured in the online space of a course/ module, as well as the tutor and student interactions. The process can lead to a rich self and peer evaluation and useful feedback.
The workshop will explore this process by introducing an online tool that has been designed to be used for self-evaluation so that practitioners and module teams can share designs without seeming to impose top-down standards. The tool serves two purposes:
  1. Greater involvement of the module leaders in learning design tasks;
  2. Enhancing the understanding of key learning design principles that lead to greater tutor effectiveness
